For one of my photo sessions, which recommended we take, I focused on textures of objects within my own garden. My objective is to capture a sense of emotion, looking for cracks, delicate, harsh surfaces that I could overlay with each other, to create something that would aim towards abstract expressionism. This project is following on from my last module's work 'Fragile', but I am aiming to explore the emotions and experiences within us in a more abstract form.

The images below (figures 1-9) are un-edited and captured on my phone as I sat with family. I was drawn to the texture and patterns of the wood and parched land on the hot day, in some ways mirroring how I felt, at that point very tired and warm.

My experimentation is to see who these images could overlay each other, bringing together the colours, contrasts and textures to reveal something else. Suggesting what things look like under the surface, for example, we may seem calm and happy, but underneath feel uncomfortable or stressed.

Double Exposure

To create this digitally, I used Snapseed on my phone, selecting one image, edited and overlaying it with the same image, then by moving it around I could find the location that I felt represented this idea. I used the overlay option and transparency to lighten or darken the second image.

The resulting image gave an illusion of a vanishing point in the centre, almost drawing you into the image, whilst still representing a tree, it could show the things, tasks and thoughts that go through our minds each day, flowing through and following the vines on the tree.
