Within

2021

Within aims to explore our internal feelings with the outside world, drawing from personal experiences with anxiety and overthinking, and how walking in nature helps to calm and distract my mind from these overwhelming thoughts.

The importance on being outside in nature and in general, has only been highlighted within the last 18th months due to lockdowns to help manage the spread of Covid-19. Many of us realised that we need space outside of our homes, which for many of us became our homes, schools and offices and being in this environment affected my own need to take time away from the screen, to switch off, stretch and process the day, even as a logging out of work ritual.

Walking is a common form of therapy for these times and moments in life, allowing us to ground ourselves, take notice of the environment and focus on one step at a time.

This project is a personal reflection of this act, and each image represents a walk and journey that I have taken in the last 3 months, subtly highlighting something under the surface that many may recognise within themselves, our subconscious responses to life perhaps and something not being quite right. My work has always had some element of personal meaning behind it whether I intended it or not and ‘Within’ is no different. Even though this work depicts a personal journey for me, it also shows a journey through my working methods as well, using a combination of digital technology with Photoshop and photo editing apps alongside physical prints on tracing paper and acetate, I explored what I could create without the use of framing within a camera, which is my usual method, to create each image, therefore creating unknown outcomes that I hope the viewer can take their own interpretation of away with them.
