Work in Progress

These images below I chose because of the subject matter, it is not of a leaf but I was drawn to the twigs bound together under the snow, as well as the snow formation around the twigs. I have used a similar editing style to my previous images, focusing on the detail of the snow and the contrasting colours and textures of the twigs, snow and pavement.

I attempted a second edit in black and white, after looking at Olivia Parker's work. Even though I have explored black and white before, I wanted to see the affect it would have on this image, removing the only colour in the image, that of the twigs. I thought of that notion that every photo of snow looks black and white in the snow. I posted both on my Instagram page, with a short explanation of my edit experiment. I had a response that the colour version was preferred and that the colour contrast against the dark negative space is becoming my own individual style, an observation I agree with. I plan to explore some more black and white images in this project, to see how it affects the aesthetic of different subjects.

Still Life - Gathered Items
Working towards my plan to explore still life and bring these items indoors shot them out of their place. I have begun collecting leaf skeletons of different states of decay and preservation. These have been disinfected and left for a few days in light of COVID-19, as well as any other bacteria they may have.

This image below, I have focused on the position of the leaf and how it is almost balancing on the grass underneath it. It could fall or fly off at any moment. Th intricate details of the leaf are clear to see against the dark green and I wanted to draw the viewers eyes to that location. the dark colour and contrast I feel works against the light decaying brown of the leaf, and almost symbolises and metaphorically shows life and death in unison.

The topics over the last couple of weeks have made me step back and think about how mu project could be viewed and seen by others, and what I am actually intending to portray. My use of the negative space, the underlying tones of health, the idea of fragility within nature and ourselves and the reoccurring object of leaf skeletons. All tie into a symbolic almost metaphorical approach.
