Work in Progress:

Fig 1 is an image I edited this week, I have looked more at the colours used in my work and how the relationship between the blacks and colour works really well. The reds and oranges in this image appeal to me, as the emit warmth and reminders of Autumn. I have used the vignette to create the dark negative space, with a gentle spotlight on the leaf, which brings our the colours against the black. Here again, I can see a resemblance to the human spine, the vertebra and structures that create it. As discussed in a 1:1 with Dr Steph Cosgrove this week, there is a metaphoric element to my work, representing an object as I see it, but with an underlying message towards the connection between our own bodies and nature.
Print Experiments
This week I began to digitally print some of my images on to A4 matt paper. Fig 2 shows two images, on the left a shot taken on my smartphone and on the right one taken on my Canon 1100D. I wanted to see how the quality of the image from my phone would come out being printed at A4, and I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of noise or distortion in the image. I used high quality printing paper for inkjet printers, MARRUTT Professional photographic Inkjet Paper, 230gsm Archival Matt Single Sided. This brought the highlights out and deepened the negative dark space.

These four images below in Fig 3, have been printed on 5 x 7, HP gloss paper. I found this paper amongst a pile of cheap Polaroid inkjet paper, so I do not know the weight or quality of the paper, but I tested the images at 5 x 7 size to see how they would look. I do feel the quality of the paper was not as good as the paper above and I do not feel that gloss paper is the correct choice for my images, the negative dark space is too light and reflective, which distracts from the detail within the images. If I print my final images for an exhibition or publication, I will choose matt paper, as I feel this would suit the feel and aesthetic of my work much more than gloss would.

Influences:
Alicja Brodowicz is a practitioner I am looking at currently regarding her use of the relationship between nature and the human body. While looking through her website, I noticed this image under the section 'Other'. There is no further detail about the image, but I was drawn to its similarity to my leaf images, mainly an image I took earlier on in the module. The detail of these leaves is incredible and the texture almost brings a tactile quality to the image. They seem to be covered in frost, which gives them a crisp yet fragile look, something I am looking at with my own work. Here, Brodowicz has captured the beauty within the detail and the vulnerability of these seeming frosted leaves.

Book Ideas
Along with the idea of creating a Zine for my project, in which I am looking at companies such as issuu, Nu Mini Press and last week I found Print On Paper. Issuu give customers the opportunity to create digital content in a variety of formats including Zines. Nu Mini Press I discussed last module, they are an independent company that print art and photography booklets and Print On Paper allows customers to design their own Zine and upload it to the site to be printed. I am also planning to create my own mini book using bookbinding skills I learnt while study on my BA Photography and Media Degree, to get an idea of layout, size and content.
Over the Christmas break I created a small photo book of photographs from my visits to Devon. this was to see how the quality and experience of using an online design platform would be to create and basic reasonably priced photo book as n idea to disseminate my work in the future. I used a site called Zno.com and a product of theirs Little Black Book, where I was able to curate the images within the book using their design pages. whether I will use this method to disseminate my work or exhibit online, I am still unsure, but I feel a Zine may suit my project subject more, the more I explore and experiment, the clearer I feel this will become.
